Summary

“Here’s the catch—even if I make it out of here alive, I need a reason to breathe again。”

When MacThomas Pockets finished his last tour as part of the Scottish Special Forces, he was hired to consult for a film director to finesse some scenes that weren’t working。 In a twist he never saw coming, he ended up moving to L。A。 to work as the bodyguard for movie star Maybe Joe Sue。

It didn’t take long for Pockets to realize there were two Joe Sues: The Joe Sue the public saw with her perfect life and her Hollywood husband。 And the private Joe Sue: the one with the traumatic youth that no amount of pills could cover up, who desperately wanted a child of her own。

Even after their paths diverged, he continued to track Joe Sue’s life。 Only a few would notice when the bottom fell out。 But he did。 And that’s when he stepped in。

The latest novel from New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin travels from Hollywood to rural Montana as one man answers the question: How far would you go—really—to save someone you love?

Charles Martin is by far my favorite fiction author, and he always amazes me with his background knowledge of so many things。 I feel like he's educating me while weaving a story that is both captivating and insightful。 Charles Martin is by far my favorite fiction author, and he always amazes me with his background knowledge of so many things。 I feel like he's educating me while weaving a story that is both captivating and insightful。 。。。more

It took me a while to get what was happening with the “before “ and “after “ chapters but then I really enjoyed the story。 I appreciated the depth and considering it as an allegory。 Great read!

Charles Martin is a masterful story teller in the contemporary Christian fiction genre, always with unique story plots and unforgettable characters。 His recent series delved into the world of sex trafficking, but like all his books, there were themes of forgiveness and new starts。 While I had liked his previous books, that series was just too dark for me despite my knowledge that he was writing truth about our corrupt world。 So I was a bit reluctant to read his latest book THE LAST EXCHANGE, but Charles Martin is a masterful story teller in the contemporary Christian fiction genre, always with unique story plots and unforgettable characters。 His recent series delved into the world of sex trafficking, but like all his books, there were themes of forgiveness and new starts。 While I had liked his previous books, that series was just too dark for me despite my knowledge that he was writing truth about our corrupt world。 So I was a bit reluctant to read his latest book THE LAST EXCHANGE, but I gave the novel a chance and am glad that I did。 Mrs。 Joe Sue is an award-winning actress, who like so many successful famous people, falls into alcohol and drug abuse as she faces unbearable work schedules, a fractured marriage, and painful miscarriages。 As the book opens, her once friend and now pregnancy surrogate is blackmailing her for millions of dollars。 No longer being protected by her faithful bodyguard Pockets, Joe Sue is kidnapped and held prisoner at her own Montana ranch。 The disguised kidnapper says she has been taken to force detox and to save her life。 The book alternates between flashback chapters revealing the back story and chapters which detail what is happening with the surrogate mother and the blackmail plan and Joe Sue's detox。 One character stands out as being superbly crafted, but I will leave that to readers to discover on their own。 I received a copy of this from NetGalley。 All opinions are mine。 。。。more

I've heard a lot about Charles Martin and the "amazing author" that he is--which I'm confident is true! So I was excited to request this from NetGalley, and hoped it'd be a great entrance into his many books。Alas, it wasn't the book for me, and I'll be curious to peruse the others and figure out which I should try again with。 (I'm not opposed to trying it again later, either--just for now, it's a DNF; I'm a bit bored and confused。)Frankly, I kept thinking "Maybe Joe" was a guy--so it was really I've heard a lot about Charles Martin and the "amazing author" that he is--which I'm confident is true! And I struggled to even stay interested in the book, especially as it seemed to (try and) combine a few genres at once, which apparently (thankfully) is not Martin's norm。 I felt validated by some of the other two-star reviews and may reach out to some of those reviewers for recommendations on which ones they enjoyed more。II received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley。 Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own。 。。。more

3。5 ⭐️ some of the characters’ choices seemed unbelievable to me。 The dual timelines of before and after took quite a while to build up to a speed that kept me reaching for the book。 Once it did, the suspense built well and ended ironically like a Hollywood movie。 I’m sure lawyers would cringe at the courtroom scene, but suspending belief, it was dramatic。 Didn’t care for the ending, but it wasn’t horrible。 The overall storyline wasn’t especially surprising, but still felt suspenseful and intere 3。5 ⭐️ some of the characters’ choices seemed unbelievable to me。 The dual timelines of before and after took quite a while to build up to a speed that kept me reaching for the book。 Once it did, the suspense built well and ended ironically like a Hollywood movie。 I’m sure lawyers would cringe at the courtroom scene, but suspending belief, it was dramatic。 Didn’t care for the ending, but it wasn’t horrible。 The overall storyline wasn’t especially surprising, but still felt suspenseful and interesting。 。。。more

another winner by this authorCharles Martin always gets my thinking cap working。 I loved this book。 So much pain and so much love。 Hope is a human need and he explored this with astounding passion。 Not everything is tied up in a neat bow as much as we’d like it to be。 I think that’s ok。

The Last Exchange by Charles Martin is a fascinating read with depth。 Charles is a phenomenal writer and consistently delivers。 This is not a light hearted read or a quick read。 You will be captured by the suspense and may need a Kleenex before it is over。

I adored this book。 The characters were so well written you feel like you know them。 You root for Joe, you love Pockets, and want to throat punch some other characters。 If you have never read a book by Charles Martin, do yourself a huge favor and pick one up today!

Incredible Books - Must Read! At the beginning of this past summer, my husband found a copy of Chasing Fireflies in a library book box。 Since then, I've been reading Charles Martin's novels。 With the release of this one, I've now read all of them。 Some of the earlier ones are a little description-heavy, but they are all incredible and worth reading。 The subject matter is never light, but that adds to their value and depth。 I highly recommend reading every one of them! Especially the trilogy。 Incredible Books - Must Read! 4。5 stars - Charles Martin writes beautifully of people that are true and sacrificial and also those who are flawed but still of great worth。 A deeper meaning always underneath。

4。5… I really enjoyed this book。 This book is about an actress with substance abuse issues, an absent husband and infertility。 She hires a bodyguard because her fame has made it difficult to be in public。 While the bodyguard is adamant that he doesn’t have feelings for her, that it’s just the job。 She finds herself falling in love with him。 Much of this book was predictable but I don’t think that it was a bad thing。 You get to see the lengths a person will go to to protect someone they love。 The 4。5… I really enjoyed this book。 This book is about an actress with substance abuse issues, an absent husband and infertility。 She hires a bodyguard because her fame has made it difficult to be in public。 While the bodyguard is adamant that he doesn’t have feelings for her, that it’s just the job。 She finds herself falling in love with him。 Much of this book was predictable but I don’t think that it was a bad thing。 You get to see the lengths a person will go to to protect someone they love。 There were a couple twists in the end and while it didn’t end all tied up with a bow on top, it was a good and hopeful ending。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 Charles Martin creates a great story on the surface, but the opportunity is there to go deeper and find the life lessons。 So many wonderful words woven into this story that continually reminds us that hope cannot be denied。 We all need a reason to take the next breath。 “ Love is what makes us who we are。 Hope is how we express us。 Hope is love with legs”。 “ A life laid down is better than a life picked up”。 The Last Exchange - me for you。

Jeanne

。 How far will you go and what will you do for someone you love? This is a book that tells one of those stories。

Amazing story! Charles Martin does it again! I loved Pockets! He reminds me a lot of Murphy Shepherd。

WOW! This story is un-put-downable! From beginning to end it will have you either racing to turn the pages, or forcing yourself not to。 These are realistic, raw characters that exhibit everything you could want in a book。 There are twists and turns I didn't see coming and a love story that is so much more than just romance。 This is an example of true, self sacrificial love。 The kind we all crave and pray we have the fortune of experiencing。 This story just may leave you dumb struck and looking u WOW! Let me preface this by saying I am a huge fan of Charles Martin's books, and I was eagerly anticipating reading his latest release。 The story still had the trademark tragic hero and the damaged heroine, but I found the prose to be a tad more formulaic than normal。 Sentences choppy。 "She didn't blink。 Take it。 She was done。 So they did。" Made me feel like I was skating over the surface of the story instead of delving into it。 There was still the strong moral center, and the lessons that this auth Let me preface this by saying I am a huge fan of Charles Martin's books, and I was eagerly anticipating reading his latest release。 The story still had the trademark tragic hero and the damaged heroine, but I found the prose to be a tad more formulaic than normal。 Sentences choppy。 "She didn't blink。 Take it。 She was done。 So they did。" Made me feel like I was skating over the surface of the story instead of delving into it。 There was still the strong moral center, and the lessons that this author strives to impart in all his books。 Those are important lessons, but at times can seem heavy-handed, especially when bracketed by the shot-gun style of prose that precedes it。 That said, I still read the book in two days, and enjoyed it。 。。。more
